Presence Research Working Group

Objetivo

The Presence Research Working Group aims to assemble a small, diverse group of researchers, engineers and other experts - people who rarely communicate with each other because of the narrow focus of their separate disciplines - to structure an interdisciplinary research program on presence research for next-generation media, information and communication technologies.

The goals of the Working Group are to:
(i) perform a critical assessment of the opportunities for R&D based on experts' knowledge of the state-of-the-art of presence research from the viewpoint of their discipline, and;
(ii) create a forum for the interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and ideas that will pave the way for fundamental, innovative research proposals. The proposed Working Group is essential for bringing together this multidisciplinary group of people, and stimulating fruitful collaborations. OBJECTIVES
The main goal of the Presence Research Working Group is to bring together the mix of expertise that can perform a critical assessment of the opportunities for R&D based on their knowledge of the state-of-the-art of presence research from the viewpoint of different disciplines. We believe the impact of fundamental research on presence will lead to significant technological innovation in Europe. The subgoal of the Working Group will be to create a forum for the interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and ideas, and to pave the way for innovative R&D proposals that lie at the boundary between different disciplines of cognitive science, neuroscience, photonic engineering, perceptual psychology, media design, computer science, artificial intelligence, robotics, human-computer interaction, and communications.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Presence, defined as the sense of "being there" in a mediated environment, has relevance for the design and evaluation of interactive and non-interactive applications in areas such as education, simulation, training, information presentation, e-commerce, entertainment, communication, travel, medicine, and psychotherapy. Despite considerable progress, research in the area of presence has been fragmented, partly because the field is still in an early, exploratory stage, and partly because of the breadth of the concept itself.

The main problem is that this area requires interdisciplinary approaches that have hitherto not been brought together with a joint focus, i.e. what is required to achieve perfect presence and how can we make auditory, visual and haptic communications believable. Integrating knowledge and ideas from areas such as multisensory perception, neuroscience, cognition, artificial intelligence, multimedia development, or telecom engineering will inform the creation of tomorrow's novel media and communication technologies. A better understanding of the problems and requirements for presence research, including a state-of-the-art description of the field and the significant research questions whose solution will bring about technological innovation, is timely and necessary to enable a well-founded approach to examine what are the most promising research opportunities for interdisciplinary breakthroughs. Towards this end, a series of focused workshops will be organized, as well as one major conference. The project website (http://www.presence-research.org(se abrirá en una nueva ventana)) will act as both a resource library and a forum for dissemination of results.

Programa(s)
