A Digital Library Competence Center

Objetivo

This project aims at establishing a Digital Library Competence Center. It will provide specific user communities with access to advanced DL tesbeds, services, expertise and knowledge. Five demonstration environments will be set-up: (a) self-publishing/scholarly communication, (b) digital library based collaboration, (c) open access to digital libraries, (d) on-line journals, and (e) indexing and searching audiovisual material. Each demonstration environment will be composed of a testbed and will be run under the responsibility of an instructor. The following user communities whose advancement depends very much on the development of the DL technologies will participate in the demonstration/training activities of the D-Lib Center: library, archivist, scholar, e-learning, electronic publishing, broadcasting communities. OBJECTIVES
This project aims at establishing a Digital Library Competence Center. It will provide specific user communities (library, archivist, scholar, e-learning, electronic publishing, broadcasting) with access to advanced DL tesbeds, services, expertise and knowledge in order to: (a) facilitate moving from the current centralized, discrete publishing model, to a distributed, continuous, self-publishing model; (b) demonstrate new ways in which DLs might enable collaboration, (c) facilitate open access to digital libraries, (d) facilitate the transition to permanent Web publishing, and (e) improve the productivity and cost effectiveness of producing and using digital audiovisual archives.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Five demonstration environments will be established within the D-Lib Center: (a) self-publishing environment, (b) open access to DLs environment, (c) Digital library based collaboration environment; (d) Web journal publishing environment, and (e) film digital library environment. Each demonstration environment will be composed of a testbed and will be run under the responsibility of an instructor. A special document including usability instructions, a small user manual, will be produced for each testbed. For each demonstration environment interested user communities will be identified in order to actively involve them in demonstration and training activities. For each of these communities, representative organizations will be identified and involved in the activities of the D-Lib Center. Particular attention will be paid to involve young researchers or practitioners in these activities.The D-Lib Center will work in the following way: ? one or more demonstration environments will be associated to each of the above user communities; ? for each environment, a tutorial will be prepared to frame the particular testbed/technologies into a more general digital library framework; ? tutorials will be customized for the single communities and given to the participants in the demonstration/training activities;? the representatives of each community participating in a demonstration/training session, in collaboration with an instructor, will design and run a case study on the chosen testbed made available by the D-Lib Center;? subsequently, people involved in a demonstration/training session could continue the training remotely by accessing the testbed from their working environment. The D-Lib Center instructors will assist them in this operation.An evaluation methodology and appropriate metrics will be defined in order to measure the impact of the demonstrated technologies on current working practices and on the take-up of these technologies by user communities.
All planned objectives and results were obtained. In particular, the project produced the following outcomes:
1) Self-Publishing Demonstration Environment. A self-publishing demonstration environment was set up based on an advanced operational digital library system which supports highly improved models of scientific information dissemination and access, i.e. the ERCIM Technical Reference Digital Library (ETRDL);
2) Course on "Self-Publishing". An advanced Course on self-publishing was produced which aimed at facilitating moving from the current centralized, discrete publishing model, to a distributed, continuous, self-publishing model;
3) Open Access to Digital Libraries Demonstration Environment. An Open Access to Digital Libraries Demonstration Environment was set up based on an advanced digital library system prototype (Scholnet prototype), which can be customized to meet the specific needs of diverse user communities;
4) Course on Open Access to Digital Libraries. An advanced Course on Open Access to Digital Libraries was produced which aimed at illustrating the possibilities provided by the new generation of digital libraries, in terms of new types of content and new functionality and teaching how to create and maintain a new generation digital library;
5) Digital Library Based Collaboration Demonstration Environment. A Digital Library Based Collaboration Demonstration Environment was set up based on an advanced digital library system prototype (Cyclades prototype) which supports a community/group of scholars while using the Open Archive Initiative content as a basis for collaborative work;
6) Course on Digital Library Based Collaboration. An advanced Course on Digital Library Based Collaboration was produced which aimed at presenting digital library technologies which enable collaboration between digital library patrons;
7) Web Journal Preservation Demonstration Environment. A Web Journal Preservation Demonstration Environment was set up based on an advanced system (LOCKSS system) which preserves access to authoritative versions of web-published journals;
8) Course on Web Journal Preservation. An advanced Course on Web Journal Preservation was produced which aimed at providing a philosophical and practical introduction to the techniques and methods for building and providing access to local e-journals collections and leveraging an international technical and social preservation and archiving systeml;
9) Geo-spatial Digital Library Demonstration Environment. A Geo-spatial Digital Library Demonstration Environment was set up based on an advance geo-spatial digital library system (Alexandria Digital Library
-ADL) which enables users to publish geo-spatial digital content for structured search and retrieval over the Web;
10) Course on Building a Geo-spatial Digital Library. An advanced Course on Building a Geo-spatial Digital Library was produced which aimed at familiarizing participants with the overall ADL technology and with the specific procedures and software involved in setting up a stand-alone or distributed ADL node;
11) Audio/Video Digital Library Demonstration Environment. An Audio/Video Digital Library Demonstration Environment was set up based on an advanced audio/video digital library system prototype (ECHO system) which provides a meta-data editing environment integrated with an A/V digital library;
12) Course on Building and Managing an A/V Digital Library. An advanced Course on Building and Managing an A/V Digital Library was produced which aimed at providing a theoretical and experimental background on the techniques and the methodologies for the organization, creation, and management of an A/V digital library.
