Objective
The ORIEL project will explore and further develop methods, technologies and protocols aimed at the integration, dissemination and exploitation of large, complex and disparate digital information resources. With a view to making such technologies widely available, it will focus on the Life Sciences as a data-intensive and highly demanding testbed that will (1) permit effective linking of different types of biological information displaying complex inter-relationships (literature, factual and multi-media databases), (2) promote ease of navigation leading to creative exploration of the information landscape and (3) facilitate user-friendly data presentation and information visualisation.
Work description:
Focussed on the Life Sciences, but extendable to other sets of complex digital data, the ORIEL project will provide the research community with tools to navigate through an increasingly intricate and confusing information landscape and to manage large collections of multi-media data.
ORIEL consists of six scientific workpackages. WP1 aims at effective harvesting, storage and access to multi-dimensional digital image data and linkage to text-based and factual information. WP2, WP3 and WP4 integrate research analysis tools with factual databases and the cognate bibliographic data. WP2 focuses on design of XML DTD's for different types of data and will address the question of data evolution and transformation using XSLT. Applicability of the XQUERY, the query language for XML will be explored. The aim will be to manage an exponentially growing mass of genomic sequence and sequence-related information in terms of organization, accessibility and retrieval. WP3 will develop data mining tools, which in the case of the Life Sciences will allow users to interpret, integrate and visualize genomic information from a variety of digital resources in order to better describe putative biological gene functions in terms of available knowledge. Using Bayesian paragraph analysis, Support vector machines and latent semantic toolkits specific to Biological Sciences, WP4 will develop a library of software tools for literature analysis. WP5 will be devoted to the development of tools that stimulate user interactivity, including collaborative browsing and the creation / editing of ontologies.
WP6 is an integrative package, that covers the:
1) close planning and monitoring of progress in WPs 1 - 5 in order to ensure compatibility of system architecture and toolkit developments;
2) validation of results through operation of a prototype-staging server accessible to selected users from the research community and;
3) dissemination of technology via the E-BioSci information network.
Milestones:
The development of new concepts that will enhance the efficiency of integration of different types of biological data currently maintained in a wide spectrum of digital collections and resources across Europe. The development and optimisation of interactive and adaptive user interfaces to promote intelligent access to, retrieval and analysis of data stored in digital form.
