Ensuring dependability of p2p applications at architectural level

Objetivo

The main objective of the P2P_Architect project is to enable software developing organisations to build dependable software systems conforming to a peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture. This is proposed to be achieved by defining and implementing a tool supported methodology for ensuring at architectural level that dependability requirements for software systems conforming to a P2P architecture are met and validate it in real life applications from the operation of typical enterprise (sub-) systems in a peer-to-peer computing environment. The project will work towards tailoring a process for ensuring that dependability requirements of P2P applications are met at the architecture level based on an advanced technical solution, supported and validated by user feedback. Results of the project will be suitably packaged in an offer comprising both software tools and specialist consultancy.

OBJECTIVES
Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing, promises a wide array of new capabilities & applications: dynamic, distributed search, distributed content storage & management, massively parallel & distributed processing and person-to-person communication. The project aims at developing methodology & tools for supporting architecture-based development ofP2P applications and ensuring at the architecture level that dependability requirements (availability, reliability, security, survivability, responsiveness) are met. Validation in specific critical domains for the media & consultancy services sectors & feedback from user groups will combine towards creating an attractive offer for the industry comprising of methodology & tools (for ensuring dependability of P2P applications at architecture level) & consultancy services.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The project workplan is deployed to ensure: co-ordination of all activities towards producing a concrete offer to the industry, comprising of methodology & tools (for ensuring dependability of peer-to-peer applications at architecture level) and consultancy services; validation in real life applications in the advertising, media and services sectors; getting as many users involved early in the project for ensuring a user driven P2P application development process, observing that key business requirements of security, dependability and changeability are just right; thus avoiding irrational costs; incremental delivery of results that can be disseminated, ensuring continuous interaction between development, dissemination and exploitation activities as well as project reviewing activities; maintaining users involved throughout the project for continuous evaluation and market orientation. The workplan follows an iterative development model and is organised around 7 Workpackages: WP1. Establish Project Baseline, WP2. p2p Application Dependability Specification, WP3. Models & notations for P2P applications architectures, WP4. Prototype Environment for architecture based development of dependable P2P applications, WP5. Evaluation & Validation through Pilots. In parallel, WP6. Exploitation & Dissemination and WP7. Project management ensure project steering, market orientation, results communication, Business strategy formulation and quality assurance issues.
