Patterns for Next-generation Database Systems

Objetivo

With the advent of hardware advances, complex information resulting from data intensive applications is posing requirements for today's (and tomorrow's) Database Management Systems (DBMSs). Such information possesses a number of key features such as huge volume of data, diversity and complexity. The term pattern is a good candidate for the generic representation of these novel information types. The PANDA Working Group will study current state-of-the-art in pattern management and explore novel theoretical and practical aspects of a pattern-based management system (so-called, PBMS). Aided by an Industrial Advisory Board, PANDA will address applications of the novel PBMS technology to real needs, such as those found in financial and telecommunications sectors. OBJECTIVES
a) Identify differences between a data- and a pattern- base management system (DBMS vs PBMS) through a detailed study of state-of-the-art research, including database and pattern recognition research;
b) Basic research on PBMS theory and implementation (modelling, interface, storage, performance aspects);
c) Dissemination of basic research results through publications and two workshops;
d) Application of PBMS theory to real needs on novel databases (moving objects time series, image and multimedia databases) aided by an Industrial Advisory Board.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The problem and state of the art will be characterised. The concept of patterns and their applicability will be studied in several domains related with the proposed work and an appropriate knowledge domain will be specified.
The logical level on which various types of patterns can be represented and queried in a homogeneous way will be specified. To this purpose, theoretical issues related to pattern representation and to the problems arising from their integration within a common model will be investigated.
The main steps are:
definition of PBMS modelling; definition of PBMS query processing;
definition of PBMS visualisation;
applications.
