A MIcrosystems manufacturing ClUSter for European users

Objectif

The partners of the project offer their technology and system know-how in order to improve the accessibility, ease-of-use, market-relevance and overall quality of services in the microsystems field. This will lead to a higher microsystems acceptance and an enhanced commercialisation. In detail the proposers will grant access to their industrially proven technologies such as thin-film, silicon membrane, grey tone lithography, silicon surface-micromachining and silicon bulk-micromachining. Since user support is a major concern of the proposal, the consortium will make its technology and application know-how available through consulting, software, libraries and cooperation. Based on their long-term experience the partners will offer a market and product-oriented approach to microsystems from design via prototyping to volume production. For promotion of this project much effort will be put into suitable marketing activities.

Objectives:
The comprehensive objective of the proposed project is the further extension of microsystems technology and products based thereon to new industrial market segments in the whole European economic area. For this purpose the partners combine their complementary expertise and technology and offer these as one service provider to potential users. The already established manufacturing services guarantee an easy access to prototyping in the microsystems field followed by a promising, market-oriented product development. This will help to establish microsystems technology and stimulate new developments. Eventually, due to an overall gain of experience, shorter design periods, faster product development and more effective production processes are reached leading to faster market introduction, higher productivity and lower product costs.

Work description:
The proposing partners have extensive long-term experience in microsystems technology and product development. The consortium consists of a large system-company (Robert Bosch GmbH), a specialist for thin-film technology products (HL-Planar GmbH) and a Fraunhofer-Institute (FhG-ISIT) with a proven record of developing industrial microsystems-technology applications. Bosch is giving full access to its surface micromachining prototyping and production capabilities. In addition Bosch will set up a new standard process for bulk micromachining in close collaboration with potential users of this technology. HL-Planar is offering customized thin film and silicon membrane technology for a variety of sensor products. ISIT will offer specialized technology services (e.g. greytone lithography), design services and support in software and library development for industrial offers. The work will be focused on the further optimisation and standardization of microsystems manufacturing comprising sensing, evaluation, packaging and system integration. Emphasis will be put on extended customer support and the efficient re-use of technology and know-how. Cooperation among the partners strengthens the ability to provide best-suited solutions concerning design, manufacturing, signal processing, testing, assembly, packaging and application. The customers will be accompanied by extensive consultancy and support throughout the whole project.

Milestones:
The main aim of the proposed work is an improved commercialisation of microsystems and an extension of the customer base for microsystems applications. For these purposes the partners will provide an easier access to a wide range of technologies, optimised design and prototyping procedures and the efficient re-use of already existing technologies. Eventually this will increase the competitiveness of the European manufacturers and users of microsystems.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
