Grid Resources for Industrial Applications

Objetivo

The GRIA project will develop, apply and evaluate a Grid testbed, based on an existing open-source infrastructure but incorporating services for:
- end-to-end quality of service to provide reliable and manageable performance;
- support for secure, end-to-end business models and processes, enabling the Grid to be used for outsourcing computational services.
The testbed will employ open standard interfaces to access Grid resources, and a toolkit will be included to make it easy to develop services and applications for the Grid.
The results will be evaluated for two industrial applications (in structural analysis and in digital film post-production), and disseminated to promote further standardisation and take-up by European industry. OBJECTIVES
The business objectives are to create a Grid testbed that allows end-users to investigate and achieve the following:
i) increased utilisation of in-house resources for running these applications, by using Grid methods to access a greater range of in-house facilities;
ii) increased peak capacity for these applications by exploiting external third party resources;
iii) increased accessibility of applications, by converting key components into Grid-based services that can be incorporated into higher-level business processes more easily; and
iv) improved overall process management, through greater reliability and accountability.
The project aims to exploit lessons from this work to promote the adoption of standards for Grid services and infrastructure and wider end-user take-up.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The GRIA project will implement an application testbed, incorporating the innovative Grid infrastructure services described below, and evaluate it against a range of distinctive data and process intensive applications. The starting point will be an existing open-source Grid infrastructure. The project will develop plug-in services for this, creating an effective testbed for industrial use, through technology developments in three key areas:
i) quality of service: end-to-end performance and service level estimation, and service level management facilities based on mapping (i.e. scheduling) of applications onto resources;
ii) interoperability: implementation of system and application resource definition, interaction and discrimination services, according to emerging standards;
iii) business processes: software support for generic Grid business models and processes and integration of PKI technology to support the structured, secure interactions needed between users and suppliers of Grid resources and services.
The infrastructure will be developed in two stages, leading to an initial prototype after 18 months supporting early end-user evaluation, and a refined test bed at month 24.
Evaluation will be conducted by customising or integrating applications in structural analysis and assessment and in 3D digital film rendering and post-production, and then assessing performance and cost-effectiveness. In this way the project will test both the usability of the open interfaces supported, and the cost-benefits from a Grid-based outsourcing of these computationally intensive processes. Dissemination will include promotion of standards, running a pilot service in the final period of the project, and promoting cost-benefits for users to encourage wider take-up.
