Neural knowledge management solutions for the coating market value chain

Objective

The objective is to demonstrate an operational knowledge development, management and distribution platform for the coating industry. Transparent information within the coating industry will result in more correct and timely information at decision level. This results in higher quality products and processes reducing economical and environmental waste. Current waste is estimated at 400 MEuro per annum in Europe only. Social objectives include increase in work efficiency and improvement of health and working conditions.

Resulting innovations are coating expert knowledge to transform unstructured information into accessible knowledge, and integration of state of the art information management tools. Project results dissemination and exploitation is actively pursued through the industry reference group. The EC is leading in coating technology. The project connects partners from 10 countries that because of expertise, would not be able to reach the objective independently.

General information:
The KnowCoat demonstrator is available from www.knowcoat.net A public version will be made available soon. For more information please contact info@knowcoat.net ,your nearest consortium member from the list below, or the technical coordinator: Zoorobotics in The Netherlands. For contact details please see below.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The main achievement of the project is the finalisation of a proof of concept of the project objective in a working multidisciplinary Knowledge development, management and distribution platform for the coating industry. The platform is constructed using a layered architecture and consists of:
- a sourcing layer combining tools and methods to intelligently capture, mine and organise information from unstructured documents.
- a knowledge bases containing semi structured XML based data, unstructured text and expert knowledge rules.
- an API for access to the knowledge base for use by developers of end-user applications
- a wide range of demonstrator applications illustrating the range of possibilities supported by the KnowCoat platform. These applications allow personalised information extraction through querying in various ways, both in web based and stand alone applications arrangements.

To reach this achievement, a novel XML standard for coating related materials information was developed : COATML. This structure is well positioned to become a de-facto standard for coating related information in the future.

Additionally, one of the first practical implementations of the novel web service architecture (WSDL), promoted by the IT industry, led by the World Wide Web Consortium , has been realised to facilitate the communication between various independent subsystems developed in different languages on several platforms.

To illustrate the power of the KnowCoat platform from a holistic point of view based on the functional scope of the user applications several innovative knowledge management techniques have been implemented including: intelligent fuzzy reasoning, intelligent information visualisation, declarative XML-based user interfaces and expert knowledge driven user guidance applications.

Additionally, for the exploitation and use of the results we achieved many relationships with industrial partners. We introduced the Industrial Reference Group (IRG), which serves the purpose of broadening the projects scope and experiences. In this IRG major coating manufactures and chemical producers are involved. For the exploitation of the results, we decided to focus on two business cases, after successful exploitation we will consider other exploitation activities. The business cases are Protective Coating Selector and Safety, health and environmental management (SHE). The consortium signed the consortium agreement, which will secure an active collaboration of the partners in future activities.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
