Integrated NetwOrks for seaMless And transparent service Discovery

Objective

The mission statement of NOMAD is the research, development and demonstration of middleware capable of seamlessly integrating available and future heterogeneous and homogenous network technologies (e.g. UMTS, Hiper-LAN2) as well as Internet compatible, multi-hop, ad-hoc networks into a single integrated network platform. Innovative technologies like mobility between devices and new algorithms for parallel usage of multiple access interfaces will be an essential part of NOMAD. Further, NOMAD will support transparent service discovery and provision over integrated networks by the means of an intelligent service location and configuration middleware mechanism. It will enable users to locate resources and services within their physical and network environment regardless of the underlying network technology. Important factors in this area will be the integration of user profiles and positioning systems information in the service discovery process.

Objectives:
Research, development and demonstration of middleware capable of seamlessly integrating available and future heterogeneous and homogenous network technologies (e.g. UMTS, Hiper-LAN2) as well as Internet compatible, multi-hop, ad-hoc networks into an integrated network platform. Research and develop highly innovative technologies like mobility between devices and new algorithms for parallel usage of multiple access interfaces and contribute to standardisation fora. Research and develop and demonstrate transparent service discovery and provision over integrated networks by the means of an intelligent service location and configuration middleware mechanism.

Work description:
1.User requirements, high level market assessment(WP1), focusing in the detailed study of end user and system stakeholders' requirements in light of the most recent developments in the state of the art & current market practices;

2.System Conception(WP2), keeping in mind that system implementation will be based on state of the art COTS hardware components, work under this package will focus in transforming user requirements into functional & design specifications for the software components of the NOMAD services network;

3.Prototype system development(WP3), focusing in the development/ implementation of functional prototypes of the essential software components of the NOMAD system;

4.Field Trials(WP4), focusing in validating system performance in real conditions of use and & measuring technical & economic adequacy by conducting a series of pilots and demonstrations in a European context;

5.Assesment and Evaluation(WP5), focusing in studying the results of the pilots and the effects of mobility in existing ASPs business models and the impacts of introducing integrated networks, transparent service discovery and location dependent services on defining mobile services;

6.Dissemination actions and exploitation planning (WP6), focusing on a series of actions to achieve the widest possible dissemination of knowledge assembled during the project & preparing the commercial exploitation of project results. This WP is ongoing throughout the lifetime of the project (30 months). Input to relevant standardisation regarding location/orientation aware services;

7.Project management & self-assessment (WP7), focusing in monitoring project activities & self-assessment procedures. This WP is ongoing throughout the whole duration of the project (30 months).

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
