Network of Excellence in Model Based Systems and Qualitative Reasoning

Objective

This network of excellence proposes to advance understanding of, and success in applying, model based systems and qualitative reasoning technologies (MBS/QR). It will position and promote these technologies as uniquely able to help solve complex problems in European business, industry and socio-economic contexts. It intends to ensure their success for competitive European advantage in a range of industry sectors. MONET1 has created the infrastructure and gathered and organized the main players. Now MONET2 will build on and extend these achievements over the next three years.

Objectives:
1. Demonstrate that the application of MBS/QR methods can enhance the capacity of European industry to innovate and compete effectively;
2. Transfer MBS/QR methods into industry and public sectors on a targeted basis;
3. Demonstrate that success in applying MBS/QR technologies in one sector is transferable to others.

Work description:
The main focus of the work will be a number of task groups, each assigned to an industrial or public activity sector. Each task group will comprise 6-8 nodes and will be supported by an allocated budget. The groups will have objectives of investigating, assessing and formulating ways to establish, consolidate and extend use of MBS/QR methods in the respective sector, identifying and overcoming obstacles to wider use of these methods, promoting successes as encouragement for wider use, within and across sectors.

For strategic reasons connected with this last point, the task group assigned to the automotive sector will be given special emphasis. This is because it is felt to be closest to securing those evident successes which will encourage take up within and across sectors. Supporting the task groups will be a co-ordinating node and a steering/executive group. These will steer overall strategic direction and provide administrative support to the task groups respectively.
