Objective
The objective of VIPdata is to research and develop a graphics input device, with the size and shape of a pen, equipped with an innovative optical sensor and wireless connectivity to a variety of mobile target devices such as PDAs, mobile phones and portable computers. The VIPdata system is proposed for overcoming the size and connectivity limitations of portable systems. The user will be able to enter multilingual text and draw graphics with the system's end unit (pen) on most surfaces, in a natural and familiar manner. VIPdata will research new concepts including user interaction with a stand-alone virtual pen, hand writing recognition database collection, and standard communication interface definition. Additional unique feature of VIPdata pen is the ability to track movement in 3D (considering also the distance of the pen from the surface).
Work description:
The work is divided into 11 distinctly defined work packages over the 24-month duration of the project. Since the work is highly collaborative each work package involves at least 2 partners. In the first stage, user requirements and needs will be identified and defined, based on extensive survey of potential customers and service providers. Also in this phase the system specifications will be defined including all the subsystems and the different tasks. Phase 2 includes the parallel development of sensor subsystem, the pen hardware and software, the handwriting recognition (HWR), and the target device software. In this phase potential applications for the VIPdata system will be researched and developed. The 3rd phase involves the system integration and the testing and validation. We propose testing of the system, and the applications with a variety of potential users. Dissemination and Exploitation will also include the task on standards and regulations and will be performed throughout the project.

- Completion of testing and evaluation steps (Month23);
- Submit Final Report, (Month24).
