Mobile Digital Broadcast Satellite

Objetivo

Several initiatives are currently on going in Europe to provide 3G terrestrial architecture with a multicast layer, able to convey poit-to-multipoint traffic directly to 3G mobile terminals. The main rationales of the convergence process between mobile and broadcast business address the capability to relieve cellular operator networks of most cumbersome and least profitable traffic while expanding service revenues opportunities. The MODIS project aims at demonstrating the services opportunities that might be provided by this convergence process, and to assess the major advantages of satellite technologies in term of performance and coverage efficiency. It also aims at providing UMTS operators with clear confidence that such multicast component might be envisaged with very limited impacts on existing standards and equipment, therefore improving their short and middle term business opportunities for multimedia services.

OBJECTIVES
The overall objective of the project is to demonstrate a multicast layer based on a satellite and terrestrial repeaters architecture over a 3G cellular network. An experimental platform representative of this layer will be set-up. Also the partners have been selected to cover all the layer's value chain from users to the content providers with support of a cellco, network & terminal suppliers and a service provider. Using selected multimedia services including video clip, audio content delivery as well as audio/video streaming applications, the project aims to demonstrate:
- The hybrid transmission scheme combining direct satellite signal and terrestrial signal repetition used in the multicast layer;
- The co-operation between both the multicast layer and the cellular network to achieve cost effective and high QoS multimedia services characterised by broadcast/multicast traffic;
- The limited impacts on existing standards and equipment, resulting in high commercial opportunities linked to UMTS market. The project constitutes the main vector to promote the concept in standardisation and regulatory bodies and towards potential investors.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The MODIS project is split in five major phases.The first phase defines the basic services to be provided by the S-DMB system. It also defines the key system requirements of the S-DMB system, and the reference architecture of the S-DMB system, which will be used to specify the MODIS platform. The purpose of the second phase consists in the definition of the trials.

It includes:
- The selection of the MODIS services;
- The configurations and scenarios relevant for service demonstrations;
- The outline of trial system architecture.

Within the third phase, the development of the testbed to be used for the trial are performed. The level of development ranges from the use of existing equipment, such as the use of 2.5G mobile network, to the design of new hardware, such as the UMTS terminal. This third phase ends with the integration of the various components of this testbed. The fourth phase is focused on the trial. A trial plan is elaborate. It defines the installation, the trial scenarios, the performance objectives, the schedule. Then the trial takes place. It will be performed in a location where a high place is available to simulate expected satellite elevation angles in a European S-DMB system typical environment. At the end of this phase, an evaluation report is provided. It includes the description of the evaluation methods, the description of key results and the trial results and evaluation in relation with the expected performance.

The fifth phase provides dissemination and standardisation actions. Its objectives are split into three categories:
- To publicise and promote the project concepts and results with the aim of S-DMB introduction;
- To establish the necessary links with the relevant standardisation bodies and actively participate in the 3G standardisation process by means of contributions to the relevant Working Groups;
- To establish links with other relevant IST projects in order to ensure a complimentary approach.
