Satellite Broadband Multimedia System for IPv6

Objetivo

The aim of this project are to evaluate and demonstrate key issues of the integration of satellite-based access networks into the Internet in order to offer multimedia services over wide areas. SATIP6 will examine the most immediate technical issues facing satellite broadband access in the coming years. The project will define solutions for the short-to-medium term focusing on better adaptation of DVB-RCS access for IP services and for the longer term in which protocols more optimised for Ipv6. During the project the main requirements of the satellite system will be identified and the overall system architecture will then be defined. Simulation of these architectural choices including aspects such as scalability, optimal utilisation of network resources, minimisation of packet loss and queuing delay will be assessed. In parallel to the simulation activity a testbed for validating the most significant architectural aspects will be set up to provide together with the simulation activity with inputs to the architecture specification activity.

OBJECTIVES
IP will serve as the common denominator to allow interoperability for services and transport technology within integrated networks. SATIP6 will examine the most immediate technical issues facing satellite broadband access in the coming years, namely the functions to be implemented in the protocol layer between physical medium access and the IP layer (i.e typically layer 2). The project will define solutions for two stages: 1/ For the short-to-medium term focusing on better adaptation of DVB-RCS access for IP services with current satellites (transparent payload) 2/ For long term in which protocols more optimised for IPv6 will be introduced with next generation satellites as a possible option (e.g. with OBP

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
During the first part of the project the main requirements of the satellite system will be identified. These will comprise (i) the main services to be supported, (ii) the satellite system scenarios, (iii) their impact on the satellite system capabilities. The major funtionalities and the overall system architecture will then be defined. Aspects such as mobility, QoS, multicast and security will be included. Simulation of these architectural choices including aspects such as scalability, optimal utilisation of network resources, minimisation of packet loss and queuing delay will be assessed. The intermediate results will be fed back into the specification tasks to optimise the system definition. In parallel to the simulation activity a testbed for validating the most significant architectural aspects will be set up to provide together with the simulation activity with inputs to the architecture specification activity. The major results achieved during the course of the project will be published and utilised as an input to the standardisation processes in areas such as DVB-RCS, IPv6 and IP inter-working in general.
