GIgaPON Access NeTwork

Objetivo

In the GIANT project, a next-generation, optical access network optimised for packet transmission at Gigabit/s speed will be studied, designed and implemented. The resulting GigaPON will cope with future needs of higher bandwidth and service differentiation in a cost-effective way. The studies will take into account an efficient interworking at the data plane and control plane with a packet-based metro network. The activities will encompass extensive studies defining the new GigaPON system. Innovative transmission convergence and physical medium layer subsystems will be modeled and developed. An important outcome of the system research will be the selection of a cost-effective architecture and its proof of concept in a lab prototype. Recommendations will be given for the interconnection between a GigaPON access network and metro network. Contributions will be made to the relevant standardisation bodies.

Objectives:
The objective of the GIANT project is to study, design and implement an optical access network that is optimised for packet transmission at Gbit/s speed over a time division multiplexed passive optical network, in order to cope with future needs of higher and more symmetrical bandwidth demands. A smooth integration of the access network with a packet centric metro network will be one of the requirements of the GigaPON. The focus of the project will be the development of a new TC-layer (Transmission Convereence), suited for packet transmission over a high-speed PON system. This will be performed in strong interaction with the current standardisation efforts of IEEE EFM (Ethernet in the First Mile) and FSAN (Full Service Access Network) for ITU-T at gigabit speed PON system. A GigaPON demonstrator will finally prove the feasibility of the concept.

Work description:
The key facets of the GIANT project are system study, validation, and implementation of the GigaPON architecture and its integration in the demonstrator.

In particular:
- The system study level involves the architecture and management studies. Based on a cost and service requirement study, it will provide the input for the technical network architecture studies to develop a resilient packet based passive optical access network at Gigabit speeds and its connection to the metro network. The results will be disseminated in standardisation bodies, such as the GPON activities of the FSAN community giving input to ITU-T and the EFM community providing input to IEEE.
- The main items of the GigaPON architecture concern packet definition, medium access and bandwidh allocation, and the transport system protocol. The upstream functionality will be tested first on a lab test bed enabling rapid evaluation and feedback for the proposed protocols and algorithms.
- Based on these studies and models the constitutive building blocks for the GigaPON demonstrator will be developed. The downstream and upstream requirements at the optical level will be studied, providing the models, requirements and selection and development of components, and suitable line and error coding schemes for high sensitivity and dynamic range at Gigabit speed operation.
- The final part will provide the specifications, the realisation and the evaluation of the GigaPON demonstrator, into which the developed building blocks will be integrated. Extensive lab tests will assess the performance of the GigaPON demonstrator.

Milestones:
- Study and simulation of GigaPON architecture and connection with metro network;
- Packet definitions and development of the subsystems, testing in the lab test bed, and delivery of subsystems to GigaPON demonstrator;
- Modeling of PM layer, and selection and testing of the EO and PM components;
- Integration and experimental evaluation of the GigaPON architecture and demonstrator based on the system studies.
