Objective
The ability to deliver cost-effective services is key to the successful introduction of 3rd generation networks. The industry identified the need for a 3rd generation (3G) Operations Support Systems (OSS) platform as key to ensuring cost effectiveness. However present day platforms are unable to support the range and complexity of 3G services. AlbatrOSS will specify such OSS architecture. It will also develop a set of OSS building blocks to support the rapid service creation, provisioning and delivery of end-user enabled services. The project has access to two UMTS service platforms that will enable it to validate its results through realistic trials. A key objective is to ensure that the AlbatrOSS approach builds on the results of past and existing EU project results and on the work of standards bodies. The project is strongly focused towards dissemination and business development. The consortium composition will ensure the impact of project results.
Objectives:
-The key objective of the project is to specify innovative 3rd generation operations support system architecture applicable to an open 3G Mobile telecommunications environment;
-A second objective is to develop a set of OSS building blocks to support rapid service creation provisioning and maintenance of mobile Internet services. The emphasis is on the delivery of end-user enabled services (such as Virtual Home Environment services). The building blocks will be derived through the customisation of already available OSS components, developed in previous ACTS and IST projects;
-The third objective is to validate the architecture and building blocks through the operation of UMTS trials.
Work description:
In order to achieve its objectives AlbatrOSS will carry out the following work:
1) Capture end-user, service provider and network provider requirements for 3rd generation networks and services;
2) Develop system business model based on requirements capture;
3) Specify OSS architecture for the management of 3rd Generation Services.
This architecture will reflect the state-of-the-art as advanced in current activities in TM Forum, IETF, ETSI 3GPP, ITU/IMT2000 and UMTS Forum. 'Openness' is an essential criterion in order to develop components that are easily interchangeable and attractive for industrial exploitation. The architecture will incorporate functionality models and building blocks to support service delivery. In particular, the architecture will identify building blocks to enable automated (location) discovery mechanisms, dynamic service component deployment as well as dynamic service composition and service federation in multi-organisational mobile environments;
4) Identify and evaluate software technologies to be integrated to support the development of a next generation OSS platform;
5) Integrate and customise open network, service and application components that are either developed within the project, reused from results of past R&D projects, or commercially available products into a OSS platform capable of supporting the delivery of 3G services. Virtual Home Environment (VHE) services is typical of future 3G services;
6) Validate the architecture through the operation of UMTS trials. The scenarios of the trials will be inherited from the business scenarios of the requirement analysis and will reflect use cases of present and future business situations incorporating VHE services. The project has access to two UMTS service platforms for the trials. Supporting end-user service requirements is a key feature of the trials;
7) Disseminate the results of the project, namely the AlbatrOSS Architecture and facilities offered by its constituent services, systems and components.
Milestones:;
-A detailed set of business models for the realisation and maintenance of 3G services;
- An open 3rd generation Operations Support System architecture for the delivery and management of 3G services. The architecture will incorporate best practice from the related standardisation work;
- A prototype of a 3rd generation corporate communications service based on VHE service components;
- The project dissemination and exploitation plan.
