Résultats exploitables

EPDIS, incorporating six partners from four different EU countries coming together in a consortium in this configuration for the first time, represents the ideal partnership for design, development and exploitation of the new envisaged safety technology for high speed craft, large rollon/roll-off vessels, bulk carriers, cargo ships and passenger ferries, especially in congested coastal waterways. The objective of the project is to introduce 3D-4D geo-referenced information systems into maritime navigation to improve safety of passage execution. By the end of this project, EPDIS will have developed the following modules: - post-processing procedure for Geomatics data, - geo-referenced data base, - EPDIS application frame executed on top of an electronic chart system, - 3D viewer for virtual reality visualisation of coastal areas and congested waterways, - interface to shorebased VTMIS for dynamic data. In the first project year the EPDIS team collected user requirements, specified the different EPDIS modules, developed a system architecture and studied a wide number of graphical 3D formats, 3D data bases, 3D viewers and data processing tools. In the second project year the EPDIS team implemented the modules. In the third project year the EPDIS team integrated the system. The result comprises a geographical database and 3D-viewer, integrated into a ship control centre and tested on a Baltic and a Med pilot, further a system for processing 3D-data.
