Open Platform for Integration of UMTS Middleware

Objectif

The OPIUM project will validate the introduction of the new wireless based applications in Europe - based on a combination of new wireless protocols (GPRS and UMTS). It will achieve this through the provisioning of end-to-end services across a Pan-European 2.5-3G network of interconnected platforms to demonstrate and validate network and service interoperability, roaming and accounting solutions. The project considers 3GPP OSA/Parlay/JAIN APIs as the starting point service level interoperability and will provide important platform for their validation and enhancement. The trial will also demonstrate the applicability of Virtual Home Environments (VHE). The project results will accelerate the move towards harmonization of 3G-network functionality. In addition to this, the project will give opportunity to anyone in Europe to access the OPIUM test beds through large interoperability events organized by ETSI.

OBJECTIVES
- To validate the introduction of the new wireless based applications in Europe - based on a combination of new wireless protocols (GPRS and UMTS);
- Build a Pan European network of interconnected 2.5G & 3G platforms from multiple platform manufacturers and operators to demonstrate and validate commercially applicable network and service accounting, interoperability and roaming solutions;
- Test through trial demonstrates the seamless end-to-end provision of advanced 3G services across the Pan European network;
- Demonstrate the applicability of Virtual Home Environments (VHE)/Mobile Service Portals for the delivery of customisable user services;
- Accelerate the move towards harmonisation of 3G network functionality;
- Give access to complex test beds to any 3G products or service developers.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The project will commence by defining service requirements based on an analysis of business requirements of future corporate service users, 3G service providers, network operators and equipment providers. The project will use the results of this work to defined scenarios and user cases for trial implementation. Use case modelling will be used to document the relevant roles of the major players in the project trials (i.e.: end-user, customer administrator, service manager, network manager roles) and for each trial a set of interrelated use cases will be defined. The next phase maps the scenarios and use cases onto a number of Pan European trials scenarios. For each trial the project will define the trial objectives trial scope, trial set-up and operation and finally the output from the trial. The set-up of the trial infrastructure, must address the interconnection of the physical and middleware platforms, implementing and testing the end-user service (UMS, VoIP, multimedia mail, etc) at various trial sites. The set-up will also be responsible for the adaption of software components and middleware platforms to support the trial operation. The project will develop a set of testing procedures and evaluation process prior to operation of the trial. This is designed to scientifically evaluate and to provide a framework for the validation of the proposed solutions. The trial testing and validation will be performed in two stages with increasing sophistication. Large and open access to the test beds will be ensured through large interoperability events. The evaluation criteria defined by the evaluation process will support a qualified evaluation process. To disseminate the results of the project through the trial website and the end-user forum. Project members will also submit more formal submissions on technical results and specifications to the standards bodies such as ETSI and 3GPP.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
