3rd Generation Telematics

Objectif

OSGi can help overcome many obstacles to the mass-market introduction of in-vehicle telematics platforms. To realise its full potential for telematics, there is a need to ensure that vehicles equipped with OSGi-based terminals can roam between any control centre and that service providers can offer their OSGi-based services to any control centre. 3GT will tackle this challenge by developing a common architecture and interface specifications (API's) for OSGi-based telematics and very widely test them in trals at 5 European test sites with a view to finalise and publish them as a stable, open standard.

Objectives:
The goal of this project is to help establish OSGi-based in-vehicle telematics platforms on the European mass market by ensuring interoperability. To do so, 3GT will finalise common OSGi-based specifications for the interface between vehicle and control centres as well as for the interface between control centres and service providers, widely test and validate these specifications in five European test sites, and publish them as a stable open standard as a key outcome of the project. Special attention will be given to the mechanisms required for pan-European service delivery and "anytime, anywhere" service access. By involving many key companies from all sectors of the telematics industry, either in the consortium or the open project Forum that will meet at t e key stages in the project, and by cooperating with organisations such as OSGi, AMI-C, MOST and the Telematics-Forum, the project believes that will generate the necessary momentum to achieve this goal.

Work description:
Project work has been divided into seven work packages (WPs) including "Project management" (WP1). The WP on "User needs and system requirements" (WP 2) will consolidate earlier work on use cases and derived system requirements (as conducted by AMI-C and the WAP Forum, for instance) into a comprehensive framework that will be used as the basis for the specification development activity and the validation work. The "Specification development" WP (WP 3) will be active both at project level, where the draft ND final architecture and interface specifications will be elaborated, and at site level, where the site implementation architectures will be documented. WP 4 is focused on "Implementation" and groups the site-specific developments and adaptations of the different prototypes: in-vehicle platforms and test cars, control centre infrastructure, middleware and services delivery platforms. "Field trials" (WP 5) will be carried out in five sites across Europe: in Gothenburg, Munich, Paris, Rüsselsheim and Torino. Two sites have fixed a wide range of telematics services to be tested. In WP 6 "Validation" an extensive, independent analysis of the field trial results will be carried out. Finally, 3GT will widely promote its results and prepare for implementation in it "Dissemination and exploitation" WP (WP 7).

Milestones:
Project progress can be traced via the following milestones: a comprehensive set of user needs and service requirements (validated by the project Forum), framework architecture and draft interface specifications (validated by the project Forum), successful trials, validation results (impact on final interface specifications validated by the project Forum), standardisation proposals, and wide project awareness leading to live demonstrations at the Madrid World Congress in the Autumn of 2003.

Programme(s)
