Thematic Network on e-logistics/e-fulfilment

Objectif

e-Thematic addresses the area of e-Logistics and, especifically e-Fulfilment. In comparison with the USA, European companies lag behind in their migration towards e-Logistics. In view of the fact that public physical and data infrastructures, which are one of the foundations of enterprise logistics, supersede the competencies of private companies and even national governments, this competitive gap cannot be closed on a company or even on a national level. The objectives of the e-Thematic network are to cluster existing European RTD projects, to identify emerging applications and technologies, to enhance the exchange of data and information on a European level, incl. good practices, to formulate views on common European RTD-approaches and to create synergy and added value for European research related to e-Logistics and e-Fulfilment.

Objectives:
The main objectives of the e-Thematic network are to cluster existing European RTD projects, to identify emerging applications and technologies, to enhance the exchange of data and information on a European level between all relevant partners from industry and Member States and to create synergy and added value for European research related to e-Logistics and e-Fulfilment. Furthermore, e-Thematic will stimulate the development and implementation of innovative concepts and will identify and introduce user focused innovations throughout the life of the project with a view to furthering e-business in the area of logistics and enhancing the competitiveness of EU industry. e-Thematic aims also at generating a European RTD-strategy in the area of e-logistics/e-fulfilment which could be used as an input for the 6th FP.

Work description:
A Steering Committee will be created which will serve as a forum to discuss the specific objectives and methodology for exchanging relevant information. The Steering Committee meetings will include representatives from Member States, research representatives from both national and European RTD projects and representatives from the industry. The approach to the national RTD activities will be performed under the guidance of the Member States, industry representatives and the European Commission. A state of the art of the EU and USA e-logistics market will be made. It will include good practices and will be used as an input for the steering committee. The work will result in clustering activities involving European and nationally financed RTD projects.

Three clusters have been identified:
1. Good practices;
2. EU-US co-operation;
3.Technologies and applications. More clusters could be added in the course of the project. With a view to optimising the clustering work, Expert Working Groups will be created for each cluster. They will prepare papers and give input for each cluster meeting. The collected data and information will be integrated in a database, which will be accessible for researchers and industry alike. Activities will be categorised and described and search strings created. The collected information will lead to a view on users' requirements, impediments and gaps. This in turn will be the basis for common European approaches on future RTD. The database will also help the exploitation of the project's results. Dissemination activities will be undertaken from the start of the project and will include inter alia: a website, information leaflets, viral marketing, the organisation of seminars, participation in workshops and conferences, etc.

Milestones:
Operational website (M6), Progress reports (M12, M24, M36), State of the art (M20), Clustering review report (M24), Database (M33), Common European RTD approaches (M33), Final Report (M36), Supporting papers for and Report on Steering Committee meeting (each six months).
