Architectural Solutions for Services Enhancing digital Television

Objective

Designing a system for modern television can be a very difficult task due to the lack of interoperability between equipment. Most of the available broadcast device interfaces are proprietary. The goal of the ASSET project is to allow easy interfacing between television sub systems by providing the missing middleware. The ASSET project will define and develop software architecture and the corresponding technologies necessary for a unified management of digital TV content covering the complete operational workflow. This will have very positive effects such as cost reduction, system simplicity and flexibility. The results of the project will be the design, development, testing and demonstration of a scalable prototype of the ASSET architecture. This system will take advantage of the results of the recent IST-1999-11238 project called G-FORS and of the EBU projects (P/PITV, P/META), and will use the MXF recommendation of Pro MPEG.

Objectives:
The ASSET project will define and develop a software architecture allowing easy interfacing between digital television equipment. This ASSET software architecture will be made available for manufacturer providing them with a set of software tools such as API, in order to make realistic a universal and unified system architecture covering the whole workflow including acquisition, creation, editing, control, storage, broadcasting, publishing and archiving of digital TV content. The final objectives of ASSET are to reduce the digital TV system costs, to make equipment implementation simple as well as flexible. The three main ASSET tasks will be to define and implement an harmonised data model as well as interfaces for accessing and manipulating the multimedia objects, to define a Command and Control System between the different ASSET components and to specify a reliable way to interchange audio-visual program material, system and descriptive metadata between the different ASSET component.

Work description:
WP1 Project Co-ordination: Commission liaison/ Project Management/ Exploitation Planning. WP1 will be used for all co-ordination and communication with the commission for monitoring purposes on progress;
WP2 User Requirement and Validation: Collect user requirements- Definition of validation criteria, elaboration of detailed test scenario and analysis of the results in the light of financial and operational pressures on content producers/ Information dissemination among selected user group of the potential benefits of networked production/ Update user requirements/Develop user test methodology;
WP3 System Specification and Architecture, to define the overall specification of the ASSET architecture comprising a Data model, a command/control system and a metadata exchange scheme;
WP4 System Implementation: Design and build a prototype middleware allowing testing and validation of ASSET concepts. This prototype middleware will be implemented on content server and news system application. It will be limited to the Validation process made by the News Director after editing and before broadcasting;
WP5 Project Assessment and Evaluation: Define project objectives in measurable form and assess project objective risk/ On-going Risk Evaluation- assess the risks in the project, monitor the technical progress throughout the project and monitor competing technologies;
WP6 Dissemination and Industry Liaison: Plan how the project results will be disseminated/ Carry out dissemination plan/ Create and maintain ASSETS Web site/ Support the ASSET group presence at major Broadcasting conferences /Creation of promotional material and work within bodies such as EBU or Pro-MPEG /Monitor the state of the market and the state of research in the relevant technology areas.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
