HELMET-MOUNTED, MINIATURE INFORMATION DISPLAY SYSTEM

Objective

Design, Prototype and Manufacture a helmet for Fire-fighters with a high resolution miniature viewer and an autonomous, portable, computer system to present to the user, images from a video camera and data from sensors integrated in the user clothes or radio received.
The system has Head Equipment (helmet, camera, viewer), Body Equipment (Control Unit and Interface Units) and Interconnect Equipment (Battery, Cabling).
For a high-resolution low cost low weight display Antiferroelectric LCD technology will be used for IMAGE MEMORY and GRAY SCALE. OBJECTIVES
Design, Prototype and Manufacture a helmet system for Fire-fighters, equipped with a high resolution, miniature, viewer and an autonomous, portable, computer system capable of presenting, overlapped to the normal viewing field of the user, images from a video camera (thermal images, standard images) and also data from sensors integrated in the clothes of the user or received through a radio-communication system.
The system is composed of a Head Equipment (helmet, camera, viewer), a Body Equipment (Control Unit and Interface Units) and a Interconnect Equipment (Battery, Cabling). To overcome the problem of having a high resolution, low cost and low weight display in the viewer, Antiferroelectric LCD technology will be used, as it is capable of providing IMAGE MEMORY with GRAY SCALE. As this technology is not currently under production, its usage will require the development of an special Liquid Crystal Mixture and the design of the driver ICs.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
WP1 - LCD MIXTURES: To develop and manufacture the Liquid Crystal Materials. To adjust the Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystal materials to the special operational sped and temperature range required.
WP2 - LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY AND OPTICS: To design, prototype and manufacture the Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystal Display and the optics.
WP3 - ELECTRONIC DESIGN: To design and prototype the electronics required to drive the AF-LCD using discrete components. Specially trimmed electric waveforms needs to be tested before designing the driver ICs.
WP4 - LCM: To design, prototype and manufacture the Integrated Circuits and the Liquid Crystal Module that will be the core of the viewer. The relatively high voltages involved and the special waveforms required will require to design custom ICs. Also the assembly of the ICs and the LCD will require to design, prototype and manufacture other electronic components.
WP5 - SYSTEM INTEGRATION: To design, prototype and manufacture the Control Unit (micro-controller hardware, operating system, application) the Interface Units (with an IR camera and with a radio-communication device) and the Interconnection unit (Power Supply, Battery and Cabling). The computer unit (hardware and software) processing the information and controlling the viewer will be designed in a modular way, allowing the usage of different "Interface Units" to customize the helmet to the needs of the users. To design and manufacture the Demonstrator, a Helmet for fire-fighters with IR video camera and data reception via radio. WP6 - HEAD EQUIPMENT: To design, prototype and manufacture a helmet to hold the video camera and the viewer. Adapting a video camera and a viewer to a safety device as the helmet of a fire-fighter is not trivial and requires many consideration and testing before being released. WP7 - PROJECT MANAGEMENT: The activities related to the management of the project and the coordination between partners, activities and results.
Dissemination Activities.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
