End-User DevelopmENT - Empowering people to flexibly employ advanced information and communication technology

Objective

The main purpose of the network of excellence is to help the European Commission to prepare a research agenda in the end-user development field for the next framework and to increase contacts among highly-qualified research centres, both academic and industrial, in order to ease exchange of information and results and speed-up the production of innovative ideas and approaches in the field considered. The domain of the foreseen activities lies in the intersection between human-computer interaction and software engineering. Usability will be a main concern at all levels of the process, while still requiring the design of approaches able to produce consistent and systematic solutions for the envisioned interactive environments.

Objectives:
During the lifetime of this network we plan to consolidate and to build on that we have achieved to date. We aim at promoting End-user development principles and practices through a mix of outreach activities, which include workshops and participation in major international meetings. Further, having established a Europe-wide community of research groups in end-user development, we aim at defining the shared vision of the future of RTD in this research area. A shared vision will provide a focus for European RTD highlighting our strengths and leading to a current presentation of European work in the global marketplace.

Work description:
The network will balance development of research ideas with industrial collaborations and dissemination of results. To achieve this the workprogramme is organized into five work packages (research coordination, industrial cooperation, information dissemination, evaluation, management and administration). The type of approaches that we plan to consider include adaptable and adaptive systems, tailoring of system functionality and user interfaces, means of annotations for individuals and user groups, and the use of effective visual and multimedia representations. Both single and cooperative environments will be taken into account. We group these approaches into three equally important areas of end user development: adaptive and adaptable systems, visual modelling for creating programs out of components and web-services, and cooperative programming. Different levels of user input will be considered, ranging from building software from scratch to run-time modifications of existing software. There will be continuous research of the abstraction level best suited to representing and manipulating information for the end user and a search for the best trade-off between domain-specific and generic end-user development environments, taking into account generality and scalability issues. We will explore various research domains where principles and practices of EUD can profitably be applied. Typical applications areas are mobile systems and their applications (for example to commerce), office and decision support applications, home applications, communities of experts, such as for CAD systems, Air Traffic Control, health care, technical maintenance. Over time we will be ready to consider additional areas that will show to be particularly promising. In all these actions we plan to establish close connections between academic and industrial actors in order to proceed from theory to practise, going from abstract methodologies and criteria to real prototypes and products.
