ACE-GIS: Adaptable and Composable E-commerce and Geographic Information Services

Objective

The project provides better and more efficient tools for development, deployment, discovery and composability (composition) of distributed web-services with special emphasis on the key combination of geographical information (GI) and e-commerce (EC) services. Geographic information is an important element integrating many application areas, because nearly all entities have a geographical component everything happens somewhere and many services are location-dependent. Better tools for developing and integrating GI and EC services will enable providers to better deploy and chain their services on the web, more dynamically and at a lower cost. Better tools for discovery and composability of web-services will increase the use of these services and consequently help to build a more viable market place.

Objectives:
The main objective of the ACE-GIS project is to provide a set of tools and a service infrastructure that enable:
- developers to efficiently build web-services from scratch, integrate existing services from multiple sources, and compose services to form new value-added compound services;
- service providers to register their services, monitor service use and regulate contracts among users and their service providers and;
- users to efficiently discover, access, configure and use available geographic information services in innovative ways through adaptable applications.

Work description:
The work schedule of ACE-GIS is divided into 5 subsequent phases, where each phase is separated into 3 work areas, e.g. demonstrators, technology development, and research. The work areas, and their interrelation through phases, are described in the following:
1) DEMONSTRATORS - Use of EC and GI services: the two pilot demonstrators (emergency and environmental planning) serve as a source of requirements and feedback on the provided solutions, whilst the pilots focus on validating and demonstrating the technology development results of the preceding phase;
2) TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT - Model-driven services development tools: OpenGIS-based GI services will be enhanced with the model-driven approach, cf. OMG-MDA. The EC services provide registries and catalogues, security and payments/billing, integrated with the IT infrastructures from ebXML and W3C/UDDI. The technology development is based on results developed in the preceding phase of the research work area;
3) RESEARCH - Model-driven tools, composability, semantic interoperability and standards integration: the model-driven tools are based on the OMG MDA (Model Driven Architecture), enhanced with semantic interoperability, and service composability and adapdability mechanisms. The standards integration work is aimed at practically integrate results of several (de facto and de jure) standards bodies, cf. OGC, ISO/TC211, OMG, W3C, UN/CEFACT and OASIS. The results will be disseminated in the standardisation organisations and other forums, such as open source.

Milestones:
Milestones are aligned with the 5 phases of the project and expected results are:
1) Service Modelling Tools supporting:
- Composability and adaptability of GI and EC services;
- Semantic interoperability of web service;
2) Demonstrations of the pilot implementations by two end users;
3) GI and EC Services integrated with commercial available products;
4) Publications and dissemination of project results, including in open source.
