Bridging the Paper Digital Divide through the use of Enhanced Inks

Objetivo

It is increasingly recognised that paper has properties or 'affordances' that the most advanced digital technologies cannot rival. Such affordances are being investigated in order to replace paper with electronic alternatives (e.g. E-books), produce new materials that have some of the properties of paper (e.g. re-imageable paper) or to make closer connections between the marks on paper and events in the digital realm. This project assesses the bringing together two initiatives currently being investigated under the EU's Disappearing Computer Initiative: the use of innovative ink and printing processes with the development of novel reader technologies. More specifically the project will produce coding patterns using conductive inks and investigate high density patterns that can be used with low cost pen-like detectors and develop scenarios to show how such technologies can form the foundation for novel ways of interrelating the use of paper and digital materials. OBJECTIVES
i) to enhance augmented paper technologies with the use of more sophisticated inks and finer grain printing patterns;
ii) to develop innovative scenarios for interactive augmented paper;
iii) to demonstrate the approach of combining paper input and paper output technologies and to disseminate the results of the project to outside parties.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The projects will explore ways of enhancing paper through the use of innovative ink, printing and device technologies. The partners involved in SuperInks seek to build upon these developments in specific ways. The partners have expertise in developing innovative reader, paper and ink solutions. In particular they are already investigating the development of (low-cost) readers for detecting locations from translucent conductive inks. In this way digital materials can be linked with locations on the page. They are also exploring the use of innovative inks so that paper can be used as a transformable display. Super Inks seeks to bring these two innovations together. First, more sophisticated inks can be developed to provide more fine-grain locations on a page and patterns that are less visible.

This work will be undertaken in Workpackage 1. Previous experience has enabled the projects to outline quite clear specifications of what might be required. The second workpackage is more exploratory. In this we will explore how the work undertaken in WP1 will form the foundation for developing a simple demonstration of both finer-grain interrelation of paper and digital resources with the enhanced patterns but also by demonstrating some paper display capabilities. We will also organise an extended workshop or atelier where we can disseminate the approach and our findings to other associates and more importantly use this event to develop scenarios to investigate potential uses of this innovative concept. It would be hoped that external participants, particularly from other FET projects, would attend and contribute to this event.
