XML Based Modelling Language for Simulation of Technical Networks

Objectif

The overall objective of the project is the development of a modelling technology for systems possessing a network architecture based on XML languages as well as evolution and adaptation of available XML supporting tools for model verification, translation and processing.

The technical objectives of the project are:
- development of an XML-based hierarchical language family for describing technical networks and the corresponding interpreter;
- development of a model generation procedure based on network algebra rules;
- development of formal verification procedures based on network algebra methods;
- development of a technology for the generating a net-work Data Object Model (DOM);
- development of a generic interface between the network DOM and an object-relational data base.

Work description:
The consortium considers the development of an XML-based language for describing the network topology in conjunction with application line specific XML languages for describing the node characteristics as an appropriate technology for solving the illustrated problems.
In parallel, tools for the formal generation of an application model will be developed. Here, the scanning, parsing, and interpreting tools available on Internet will be considered and adapted. The methods of network algebra will be used for the model consistency verification. Specification and design of an application-oriented relational and/or object-relational databases will be considered. Furthermore, methods for the information exchange between network nodes on semantic level with respect to a product line domain will be created. Herewith extremely flexible distributed scenarios for the application processing will be realised. Additionally, XML-based methods for generative interface programming will be developed.
The problem of the model data regularity has to be investigated while the model information originates from heterogeneous information sources. The methods for the data model consistency verification will be investigated, and an XML-based language for data consistency modelling will be designed.
Finally, component-based software engineering technique for the efficient distributed implementation of high quality "product families" will be realised. Accordingly, available libraries of domain specific basic components will be linked to produce a site-specific application.
Water supplying networks, oil distribution networks, road networks, as well as data acquisition and processing trees will be considered as application examples for the network-based structures. The project results will be demonstrated in application domains of the SME proposers.

Milestones:
The project results are: an XML-based language family with interpreter for technical network modelling, model generation and verification procedure based on network algebra rules, and generic interface between the network DOM and a relational data base. The technique will be integrated into the business processes of the SME proposers.
After project month 12, a milestone is foreseen. Here, specification of application domain models and XML-based language will be available. Additionally a preliminary version of the network language interpreter will be available for testing.
