Objective
Objectives
The general objectives of the project are:
extension of the MCFC bipolar plate lifetime to 40,000 hrs compatible with 2nd generation technology development;
development of alternatives for the crucial anode-side corrosion problem;
assessment of alternative technical options, considering endurances and costs.
Technical Approach
The proposed work can be subdivided as follows:
Selection of alloys
Exposure tests will be performed on high-Al ferritic steels and high-Cr ferritic steels for the anode and cathode environments, respectively. This will result in the selection of an alloy for each environment and estimates for lifetimes, independently of other work-packages.
Development of advanced coatings
The stability and dissolution behaviour, and the lithiation behaviour of pure coating materials will be investigated.
Expected Achievements and Exploitation
The expected achievements are:
selection of high-chromium ferritic stainless steels required for cathode-side endurance improvement from 25,000 to 40,000 hrs; selection of high-aluminium ferritic steels for 40,000 hrs endurance at anode conditions;
characterization of properties and endurance behaviour of coating materials;
development of bond coatings and protective coatings and their application techniques, for anode-side application;
technical verification of selected options in small-scale MCFC; assessment of options considering technical viability, endurances and costs.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
