Optimum management system with environment monitoring

Objetivo

Objectives
The project aims to optimize the management system of a plant, such as a cogeneration plant, through environmental monitoring of plant emissions and using an overall approach for component modelling (cost, environment, etc.).
During the project, the following will be pursued:
a) energy savings through an automatic procedure for optimum load allocation during plant operation;
b) reduction of plant pollutant emissions by including, in an off-line model, constraints and environmental costs, established according to data acquired by the environmental monitoring systems.
Technical Approach
Thermal cogeneration plants are usually equipped with parallel systems; thus, the electric power can be generated by parallel heat engines (diesel engines or gas turbines) and by parallel steam turbines. The plant will be modelled through a set of software codes taking into account mechanical (University of Rome, Fachhochschule Schmalkalden), cost (University of Ulster) and environmental (National Technical University of Athens) aspects of the plant components. These software codes will improve operation efficiency by computing the suitable loads for the various equipment, taking into account actual conditions, emissions and economic aspects. The relevant information will be exchanged through a common database, while the control software code will be implemented by logic programming techniques (Cap Gemini).
The cogeneration plants at FIAT and HAR will provide the necessary data for two case studies. ENEA will prepare the validation set-up at the two plants before and after running the model.
Expected Achievements and Exploitation
The expected achievements are as follows:
- a fast and reliable automatic method for finding optimum set point maps;
- updated component behaviour by using functions and parameters, and by adopting computed deterioration scaling factors (or functions); - deterioration parameters periodically obtained by inverse solution of the plant functional model to be used as input data to the plant optimisation model;
- constraints and environmental costs to define the plant emission levels for the various pollutants. Such constraints and environmental cost functions will be established according to data acquired by the environmental monitoring systems used in the case studies.
It is expected that the results of this study will be used at the FIAT and HAR plants.
