Improved energy efficiency in membrane processes - water desalination and purification

Objective

Project Objectives

The objective of the project is to develop methods to improve design and operation of membrane water-treatment facilities, coping successfully with fouling for various feed waters. This will be achieved by the development of advanced feed pretreatment facilities based on the use of an ultrafiltration membrane pretreatment process, the development of improved fouling control techniques based on dosage of anti-scalants and, the development of criteria for selecting optimal pretreatment facilities depending on the types of raw water and membrane.

Technical approach

A multi-pronged approach will be followed:
laboratory investigation including membrane fouling and scaling, and fouling mitigation measures;
pilot scale tests including ultrafiltration alone and coupled with other membrane processes;
development of standard characterization methods including water and membrane characterization;
economic evaluation of alternatives and formulation of criteria for pretreatment selection including performance studies.

Laboratory results will assist the interpretation of pilot-scale data, form the basis for developing standardized raw water tests and contribute towards establishing sound selection criteria for pretreatment processes. Pilot tests are crucial, insuring the best utilization of laboratory results and the development of realistic water testing and process design methods. The successful execution of the previous will lead to the development of generalized process selection criteria.

Expected achievements and exploitation

It is expected that the results of this project will provide significant economic, environmental and social benefits, including:
development of better feed pretreatment processes leading to energy savings and cost reduction;
environmentally friendlier processes, drastically reducing unnecessary quantities of chemicals;
desalination/purification processes capable of treating poor quality feed waters, currently not utilized especially in arid regions.
The results will be applied to upgrade existing facilities or future water treatment plants and to improve expertise and the quality of services to water treatment industries.
