Objective The environmental impact of potato flour factories is significant, due to a considerable loss of heat energy from drying and protein extraction processes and distribution of waste water on farm land; a very large consumption of fresh water; and generation of large quantities of high COD waste water. The intended project will therefore focus on rationa- lization of the use of energy and fresh water at the factory. The overall idea is to develop and integrate appropriate systems for separation and desalination in the process scheme and to run existing processess fx. the protein extraction, as well as production of innovative products, and integrated biometha- nization of excess organic matter, on a more concentrated material, whereby considerable amounts of energy and fresh water can be saved, and the total environmental impact of the factory can be reduced to a minimum.
