Daylighting products with Redirecting Visual properties

Objectif

Objectives:
With novel daylight components in the building envelope it is possible to improve both the daylight quantity and quality in the room and to control the solar energy transmittance. Either with a passive product (coated glazings, glazing with special angle dependent properties), or active (electrochrome, louvre type of blinds sun shading screen), and/or with selective properties with respect to the different parts of the solar spectrum (daylight versus solar heat).
At present, it is not possible to compare daylight transmitting products with respect to their capabilities to reach a deep distribution of daylight into the room and to prevent glare.
The overall objective of the project RE-VIS is to develop the detailed daylight product information needed for a Europe-wide uniform comparison and selection of novel products.
Technical approach:
The research involves the development and evaluation of a test procedure (goniophotometer), series of test results on samples of novel glazings and sun shading components, definition of product daylight quality indices (on potential to avoid glare, to redirect daylight for better distribution and to view through) and a database and software tool for the organization and calculation of these properties.
This will be done through research with a prenormative character:
- Determination of the full angular (bi-directional) distribution of solar/light radiation transmitted through and reflected in daylight components (glazing, sun shading).
- To use this angular distribution to characterise the quality of the daylight transmitting product, with indices which have to be carefully defined, describing the potential of the product to prevent glare, to redirect daylight and to allow a view through.
- To upgrade the database and calculation routines of the uniform European software tool WIS for the determination of thermal and solar properties of windows.
An important target of the project is to try to have the results European wide accepted and generally used. To this extend feedback from, European industry, building practice, consulting engineers/designers and persons involved in international research and standardisation will be organized as part of the research activities.
Expected achievements:
It is expected that the project will yield the following results:
Measurement data of the full angular (bi-directional) distribution of solar/light radiation transmitted through and reflected in a daylight component (glazing, sun shading), measured in validated goniophotometer equipment, on a number of samples representing novel daylight products. A set of indices on the daylight transmitting quality of glazing and sun shading products in terms of their potential to prevent glare, to redistribute the daylight and to view through, accepted by industry and building practice and basis for future European standardisation. Upgrade of database and calculation routines of the uniform European software tool for the determination of thermal and solar properties of windows, WIS, with detailed daylight distribution data of components and calculated daylight product quality indices.

Programme(s)
