Objectives
SNAP is a novel process for dry removal of SOx and NOx from flue gases. It is based on adsorption of the acid gases onto a regenerable alumina based sorbent in a Gas Suspension Adsorber (GSA) and subsequent regeneration. The objectives of the project are to optimize and improve the process which is presently being demonstrated on a 10 MW plant at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The optimization is done in collaboration between FLS Miljø (FLSN) and University of Gent (RUG). The work is divided into five work packages:
- the study of chemical mechanisms and chemical kinetics,
- exploration of alternative regeneration gases,
- improvement of the used sorbent,
- development of an empirical model for the SOx and NOx removal efficiencies
- a hydrodynamic simulation of the GSA.
Technical Approach
A laboratory test unit for the study of the chemical kinetics of the adsorption has been designed and is being constructed at RUG. The tests will include determination of adsorption kinetics and chemical reactions. At the same time a laboratory scale reactor is being built at FLSm for determination for regeneration kinetics and to enable evaluation of alternative reducing gases and new sorbent performance. The development of an empirical model for the SOx and NOx removal efficiencies will be performed by FLSm, and will be based on actual data from the SNAP demonstration plant at DTU. The process conditions required for an empirical model determination will be based on statistical software packages. The hydrodynamic modelling, performed by RUG with input from FLSm, will include development of a model for turbulent gas-particle interaction. The hydrodynamic model will be solved on the basis of an integrator already developed by RUG.
Expected Achievements and Exploitation
The output from this project will be:
- Determination of the chemical mechanisms and corresponding kinetics. - Specification of a suitable, economically optimum regeneration gas. - Development of a physical basis for the design of a novel sorbent. - Evaluation of new sorbents.
- Development of an empirical model for SOx-NOx removal efficiencies for optimization of the process conditions.
- Development of a hydrodynamic model for the Gas Suspension Adsorber that, in connection with a chemical kinetic model, will enable operation optimization.
All the above outputs will enable continued improvement of the SNAP process in the next years, and will be of great use in the design and operation for future full size SNAP plants. It is expected that a full size SNAP plant will be in operation within 3 years.
