Objectives
Hybrid Photovoltaic components are building elements in which the PV elements produce electricity and the heating of the elements is used for other purposes. The key objective of this project is to develop a standard scheme for the performance evaluation of hybrid PV building components. Emphasis will be given to the assessment of thermal and electrical performance of these elements; other aspects, such as maintenance, durability, air and water tightness, ventilation, daylighting, will also be covered.
Technical Approach
The project is organised through 4 Task Areas:
Task 1: Development of a performance evaluation scheme for hybrid PV components, in collaboration with industry
Task 2: Further refinement of electrical performance evaluation procedures of hybrid PV components
Task 3: Development of standardised test procedures for thermal performance evaluation of hybrid PV components
Task 4: Modelling: Development of concept for scaling and replication of results on hybrid PV components
For the experimental work, a reference component will be developed. The reference component will be subject to intensive and parallel testing at various test sites spread over Europe to assess the repeatability of the performance and the climate dependency. The test results will calibrate a simulation model. Close collaboration with industry will be set up to shape the procedures to the needs of the market. This will be organised through a seminars and the publication of a quarterly newsletter.
Expected Achievements and Exploitation
The output of the project includes the following deliverables: Well documented protocols for the global performance evaluation of hybrid PV components as well as their application in a certain building for a given climate.
A protocol for the assessment of the electrical and thermal performance of hybrid PV components in outdoor test cells.
A report on the outcome of the proposed procedures when applied to commercially available hybrid PV components.
A forum for information exchange between the industry concerned (PV, glazing, facade constructors, engineering, ) and research organisations involved in performance assessment.
The close collaboration with the industry of hybrid PV components will guarantee an optimal information transfer to practice. The final reports will be available for all interested end users. The newsletter will keep all interested end users regularly informed about the progress of the project. The application of the adopted procedures will be guaranteed in the long term, as all the test centres are managed by the PASLINK EEIG.
