Hybrid wind-biomass system for rural electricity generation

Exploitable results

The objective of the project has been to develop and test a hybrid renewable energy system (HRES), to provide electricity for rural locations which would adequately satisfy consumer requirements of power quality and availability, without the use of any form of fossil fuel or battery storage. The combination of wind turbine, anaerobic digester and gasifier within the HRES, provides a novel approach to electricity generation from renewable energy sources. The HRES is complete despite the difficulty of bringing together such diverse pieces of equipment in such a short period of time. It remains as a basis for research and development into renewable energy systems, and the real benefits of the work will become apparent over the next few years. It is intended that the system will be used to examine the advantages and drawbacks of the three forms of renewable energy and to report factually. Although the system is not large enough for commercial operation, it is considered to be of a size to give real financial information as well as technical answers.
