Development of a rotor blade using renewable materials

Objetivo

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The aim of the project is the development of a rotor blade of about 6m length for a wind turbine of about 30kW using renewable materials like LNS (light natural sandwich material). The LNS consists of a core of orientated hollow plant stalks and wood-based top layers. Also natural based adhesives for the composite core matrix and bonding the plywood surfaces are under development. Further material testing to get design data for the LNS is needed and the harvesting and production techniques need to be developed and optimized to industrial standard. A cost evaluation of the renewable blades with regard to blades of carbon-epoxy or/and glass-polyester and a feasibility study of the applicability of this kind of technique for larger blades (100 kW or higher) will be carried out. A sustainable development of wind energy industries will be promoted assuring improved public acceptance and rational use of energy and resources.

TECHNICAL APPROACH

In a pre-design study it will be decided in which parts of a blade for an existing WTGS the LNS can be applied. With the first estimates the dynamic behaviour and blade loadings for the WTGS will be investigated. Specimens of the LNS and of structural details will be produced for material characterization with respect to static and fatigue strength test data. After the final design of the rotor blade the new dynamic behaviour and blade loadings will be investigated with the actual values for LNS. A set of three rotor blades will be manufactured. Work on an optimization of the harvesting and production process for LNS and on an optimization of the manufacturing process will be carried out. During a blade test one blade will be loaded in flapwise and edgewise direction to measure the blade stiffness and strain distribution. Afterwards the blade will be tested in fatigue. Two other blades will be installed on a commercial WTGS. Accompanying measurements will be carried out before and after installation of the new blades. A cost evaluation of the renewable material and a feasibility study of the applicability for larger blades will be carried out. Interested institutions, companies and official authorities will be informed about the results and their convertion.
EXPECTED ACHIEVEMENTS AND EXPLOITATION

Two rotor blades with the renewable material LNS will be installed on a commercial WTGS which will serve as a "demonstration ind turbine" for prooving the applicability of renewable materials in wind energy applications. A comparison of noise, power output and loads for the WTGS with original rotor blades and rotor blades using LNS will be presented. The derived results about the material characterization (static and fatigue data for LNS) will be published to increase the knowledge about renewable materials. An optimized harvesting, production and processing procedure for LNS will further reduce the cost for LNS. The results will be presented in various publications and at conferences to bring together producers of renewable materials and wind energy industry to discuss the applicability of further renewable materials in components of WTGS. A sustainable development of wind energy converters and their components will result, reducing possible disposal problems and therefore enhancing the public acceptance.
