Objective
The objective of the study is to develop a PV module which will embrace all the latest developments to make a module for building integration which is both functional as a PV module but which is also physically attractive and has a value in enhancing the aesthetic appeal of buildings which incorporate such modules. The project will be carried out a by a consortium which combines for the first time creative designers from the visual arts with photovoltaic technologists. The modules will be made using the latest technology for making coloured laser grooved buried grid solar cells on multicrystalline silicon substrates. Both artists and technologists will combine to set criteria for the design of the modules. The design will be developed to be innovative in its construction and striking in its visual appearance. A wafer manufacturer, cell manufacturer, facade constructor and building consultant are all involved in the project as well as research institutes and the design group. It is targeted to produce several prototypes which will combine different cell shapes and colours in an attractive way but still have a PV efficiency of 8%. It is hoped to develop the overall market for PV integration in buildings by moving the focus of the PV away from comparison with fossil fuel generation to enhancement of the value of a building through visual innovation and environmental friendliness
