Objectif
The central purpose of this proposal is to characterise the micro-climate within cities in relation to urban form. The specific aims are:
1 To establish quantified generalised relationships between microclimatic characteristics at a neighbourhood scale and the geometric morphological properties of urban form.
2 To develop a simplified urban porosity model that describes the microclimatic characteristics of an urban texture, in overall terms, so that as the physical form of the urban texture is changed, the likely effect on environmental conditions, energy use and the potential for renewable energy can be determined.
3 As a first step towards validation, to apply the model and the environmental assessment techniques involved to a selection of representative existing European urban textures for which data can be obtained
4 To apply the model and associated techniques to two particular case study urban sites where major interventions are planned so that alternative proposals can be assessed in collaboration with the municipalities concerned, in this way testing the potential of the model as a practical bioclimatic urban design aid.
5 Based on the experience of these practical applications , to assist municipalities, such as those involved in 4, in drawing up urban design guidelines and in considering the implications for byelaws, legislation, etc.
The principal beneficiaries of the project will be planners, architects and other professionals involved in urban issues, for whom the urban porosity model will be a major advance as a bioclimatic urban design aid, applicable to any urban area throughout the European Community.
Municipalities and local communities will thereby benefit by having an objective means of assessing the environmental impact of alternative proposals for change, ranging from major interventions to incremental improvements of existing urban areas.
The project will thus have benefits of wide applicability and will contribute significantly to enhancing the quality of life and wealth creation by making it easier for all sectors of the community to participate in creating improved urban environments.
