Objectif
Following the United Nations Conference in Rio on the Environment and Development, the European Union committed itself to first stabilising and then reducing CO2 and CFC emissions. One obvious and straightforward way to reduce CO2 emissions is to reduce the heat loss of buildings. Better insulated buildings on one hand, and the continious growth of computing on the other hand, have lead to an increased requirement for cooling to avoid uncomfortably high temperatures during a relatively long period of the year. An increasing number of buildings will be touched by this development. Therefore, There is a strong demand for CFC free, cheap, smart and energy efficient cooling systems.
To overcome this situation, the partners of this proposal suggest to combine a closed wet cooling tower, also called indirect contact evaporative cooling tower, with a chilled ceiling to one system. Both of the components are well known, but in this combination futher research and development is needed.
Details of the main objectives are:
1. To improve and optimize an existing closed wet coolong tower technology to suit the system,
2. To develop a simple and cheap control strategy for the system taking the building mass inot account,
3. To improve the system with regard to minimize investment and running cotst and energy consumption,
4. To know the applicability of the system, depending on climate and use of the building,
5. To give a simple guideline, which show how to install and run the system, to building services, consultants and HVAC installers.
It is expected that after the end of this project, the system can be put into action by ordinary HVAC installers. There is a great potential for use of this new system in the retrofit of existing as well as new buildings. The area of use is expected to take the entire European region and export markets, tropic climates excluded.
The project is broken down into there work packages (WP1..WP3) each one with several tasks, in the following way:
- WP1: Development of a closed wet cooling tower (CWCT).
- WP2: System design, modelling and simulation. (The system is made up of theCWCT and a chilled ceiling).
- WP3: Long term system performance test.
