Stagnation technology for thermal solar systems<br/>

Objectif

Solar active thermal systems are still used almost exclusively for domestic hot water purposes only. But solar thermal systems for additional solar assisted h eating are coming up now on the European market. In Austria, already 20 % of th e yearly installed collector area is used for solar assisted heating with solar heating fractions of 15 to 60%. In Germany, most of the solar companies now of fer systems for solar assisted heating. In the daily practice, however, there a re problems with overheating and stagnation during summer time. These problems more often occur in systems designed for solar assisted heating (due to the lar ger collector area), but they also occur (although less often) in systems for d omestic hot water only. The ultimate aim to which the project is contributin g is the development of collector systems that guarantee a continuous and maint enance free operation even if the systems are often and for a long time during the summer subjected to stagnation conditions. This goal of achieving a high te chnological reliability is of utmost importance, not only for the project partn ers but also for the European thermal solar industry, as it strengthens the end consumers confidence in the solar thermal technology and thus ensures a contin uing positive development of the European thermal solar market. The objectiv es and expected achievements of the proposed project are: . to achieve an ex act and clear understanding of the processes that really occur under stagnation conditions in solar systems . to uncover the reasons for the behaviour of ins talled solar systems in which the safety valve of the collector loop is activat ed although it should not do so with regard to the technical rules considered a s state of the art . to determine the conditions to which the components of th e solar systems are subjected under stagnation conditions. This refers especial ly to the components collectors, pumps, membrane expansion vessels and fluids. It is important that this is investigated also in field systems that are instal led at the end users. . to develop an intelligent, rule based control strategy which prevents stagnation conditions with evaporation. The conditions (collect or area, storage tank volume and weather conditions) under which a total preven tion is achieved will be determined. In the other cases a considerable reductio n of stagnation frequency will be achieved. . to develop, build and test proto types of micro controllers that use the new control strategy. To achive this , experimental investiations will be carried out on a specially instrumented te st system and on two smaller systems for fluid ageing and subjecting the collec tor loop's components repeatedly to stagnation conditons. Three field systems o f end users whose systems show unexplainable stagnation behaviour will be inves tigated. A new control! strategy will be developed and realized in a micro cont roller. It will be tested in the project.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
