Integration techniques for up-scaled SOFC modules (SOFC integration)

Exploitable results

The project aimed to optimise the stacking of planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) components with ceramic bipolar plates, and to investigate suitable sealing designs in an up-scaled integrated SOFC module. This would allow improved component design and overall operational performance of the SOFC. A fuel cell is an energy conversion device capable of producing electricity (and heat) from fuels such as hydrogen or methane. The development of efficient SOFC is attractive for industrial and utility applications, as the high operating temperature make it unnecessary to use expensive catalysts and enables direct processing of the fuel itself into electricity. High temperature fuel cells, such as SOFC, are also able to tolerate relatively large amounts of impurities in the fuel. Furthermore, since fuel cells can use both fossil fuels and synthetic fuels, they offer highly sustainable characteristics as future energy converters.
