The promotion of renewable energy sources requires considerable policy support both nationally and internationally. The two books published under this project as a result of the analysis of renewable energy strategies conducted has made a significant contribution to the promotion of renewable energy at a political level.
The national and international promotion of renewable energy sources requires the development of suitable policies by governing bodies. This project examined the policy issues entailed in the promotion of renewables. The principal focus was on the appropriate institutional structures, optimum government policies and the financial commitment required to promote alternatives to fossil fuels. It included the analysis of the relationship of these policies with other policy goals, e.g. agriculture, examined lessons learnt from other promotional programmes and examples of possible applications. The rationale for the focus on non-fossil sources is both from a CO2 emission reduction perspective as well as that of security of energy supply.
