Résultats exploitables

A press section engineering tool was developed to model the operation of the press section of a paper machine. The model was tested and validated against industry and laboratory assessments. It can be of use to a range of industrialists in the paper industry, where it may help to increase energy efficiency and to optimize process intensification in this high-energy industry. The work involved the compilation of modelling software together with investigations to identify and describe the basic phenomena occurring during the process being modelled. The research involved: using a wet press simulator to investigate compression behaviour of wet fibre webs; analysing textures of paper sheets and felts microscopically and macroscopically to study pressing and permeability aspects of the web and fabrics; and fundamental studies on absorbency and prediction of surface parameters. Finally, the results from these studies were fed into the model for subsequent validation. The main output from the project was the construction and validation of a model to simulate wet and hot pressing. Practical applications of the software were identified, in particular ways to optimize the operation of the press section of a paper machine. These aspects may be water removal, or paper quality, or both water removal and paper quality combined. In addition, the software could be applied to optimize the design of the press, the felt, and the press covering. All of these factors can be significant in influencing the efficiency of operation of the paper machine.
