Solid state electrochromic variable transmission windows

Exploitable results

The project aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of controlling light transmission through a window glazing. This would be achieved by the use of a solid state variable transmission device, based on the phenomenon of electrochromism. Such a "smart" window in buildings, controlled electronically, would allow a gradual change in optical characteristics through the visible and infrared range of the solar energy spectrum. Although the idea of smart glazing has been around for some time, it was only recently that improvements in knowledge and materials have enabled the idea to be implemented using a thin film device. The present project is a continuation of a research programme on "smart" windows started during JOULE I, and it aims to demonstrate the feasibility of an all electrochromic device for use as smart windows in buildings. The project hoped to produce a solid state thin film device with a life-time in excess of 40,000 cycles and light modulation of 50%. This specification imposes great demands on such an electrochemical system and requires the development of highly stable thin films.
