A high efficiency high power two-stroke engine

Exploitable results

A multi-cylinder two-stroke petrol engine was developed with uniflow scavenging and fresh air intake through a rotary valve. The aim was to achieve high power density and fuel economy with low emissions and to progress towards a compact four-cylinder engine design for small vehicles. In parallel, a multi-cylinder, indirect diesel injection, supercharged two-stroke engine with loop scavenging was designed and constructed. The scavenging system was optimised to facilitate progress towards a four-cylinder engine design. More efficient engines for automobiles are now needed to mitigate the greenhouse effect by emitting less CO2. Among the available technologies, two-stroke engines offer good overall efficiency. However, they tend to emit higher levels of NOx and unburnt hydrocarbons. To control these pollutant emissions, there must be a good internal sealing system and effective control of the scavenging flow. This project was concerned with technology for high power two-stroke engines, with proper sealing and scavenging flow control.
