Integrated Basin Studies (Geoscience II Project)

Objetivo

The project aims to produce a new generation of basin formation models by improved description and modelling of basin fill architecture. The work will concentrate on the study of the physics of compaction and fluid flow in fine grained sediments to provide a better basis for modelling fluid flows and pressure regimes in basins and the physical processes of expulsion of hydrocarbons from source-rocks.

Several consultative geoscience meetings in Europe concluded that a main axis of future research in geosciences should be the study of sedimentary basins, with two key requirements: integration of disciplines and modelling. The project fulfils these two requirements, as a careful study of the sedimentary response to tectonics and to the kinematic evolution of basins will be undertaken, to develop new models of basin formation and evolution.

The project consists of six modules: Module 1: Rifted basin modelling constrained by the Gulf of Lion example. The work will concentrate on the integration of the mechanics of brittle extensional tectonics and strain localization in order to reconstruct the subsidence history of rifted basins.

Module 2: Foreland basins modelling constrained by Iberian and German basins. The near surface structural evolution caused by both brittle and ductile deformations and by the inheritage from phases of rifting preceding the foreland history will be reconstructed.

Module 3: Dynamic of the Norwegian margins with constraints from the Viking Graben, the More Basin and from the Norway Greenland conjugate volcanic margins. The research consists of reconstructing the tectono-magmatic history of the margins, evaluating the basins configuration through time, the style of deformation for each tectonic episode, and quantifying the magnitude of crustal - lithospheric extension.
Module 4: Compaction and fluid flow in fine grained sediments. An accurate as possible mathematical description of the relationships between porosity, permeability and stress during burial for each major lithological type will be produced.

Module 5: Modelling of the sedimentary response to tectonics at different scales. This module will describe the modelling activities which will be undertaken in modules 1 to 4.

Module 6: Synthesis of scientific results. The module will consist essentially of a comparison and homogenization of the data collected, and of the results obtained by the different teams.

PECO Data provided from the Pannonian basin (Hungary) will contribute to the work of modules 1, 5 and 6.
