European Hot Dry Rock geothermal research programme 1992-1993

Objetivo

This contract covers one element in a long-term programme aimed at demonstrating the recovery of useful heat from deep, poorly permeable basement rocks. Eventual success would open up a large new energy source, available to all European countries. The work is referred to as "Hot Dry Rock" (HDR). A series of such projects have been undertaken at a national level in several European countries since 1977. All these teams have now been brought together into a single European project, with the aim of developing a prototype HDR unit on a single common site. The objective of this contract is to compare the relative feasibility of developing the pilot plant at one of three sites - Soultz (France), Bad Urach (Germany) and Rosemanowes (UK) - and, where necessary, to obtain more detailed data at depths of interest..

The contractors will obtain data about the rock properties for Soultz and Bad Urach at a depth where the in-situ temperature reaches 180 C, by direct measurement where possible and by extrapolation if direct measurement cannot be achieved. Comparative data for Rosemanowes will be inferred by extrapolation from existing results. The tasks on the Soultz site in 1992-1993 will concentrate on the deepening of the present well GPK-1 followed by direct data collection, in-situ measurements and an extensive test programme. The tasks on the Urach site will concentrate on the deepening of the present well Urach 3 followed by in-situ measurements and some small scale hydraulic experiments. The tasks on the Rosemanowes site will concentrate on the development of tools and techniques for operations during and after the present phase of the work; the Rosemanowes team will also assist with the operations and feasibility studies at the three sites. Extension of the project for 1994-1995 covers more detailed testing of the deepened GPK-1 well at Soultz and the drilling of a second well (GPK-2) to depths of 3600-4300m.
If the results obtained during this phase are successful, the work may be expected to lead to the construction of a pilot plant post-1996.
