Numerical scale-up and design of high efficiency mixers for the control and optimization of the yield and the selecticity in chemical reactors

The chemical industry is a major energy consumer. This project has led to the optimisation of power consumption in chemical mixing vessels, through the scaling-up of high efficiency reactors to increase process yield. In the chemicals industry, large amounts of energy are consumed. The energy efficiency of a large number of processes can be increased by appropriate technological improvements. Due to the volume of reactants involved, even marginal improvements in the efficiency of a process can result in significant energy savings. The objective of this project was to improve the understanding of the fluid dynamics inside mixers, such as stirred tank vessels, with conventional or new impellers. This was achieved through the development of a model which enables the optimisation of chemical reactions with regard to power consumption, mixing properties and process yield. This also leads to time and cost savings in the conception and scaling-up of reactors and the increase of existing process yield.
