Improvement of turbulence modelling for internal combustion engines

The objective was to improve knowledge of turbulence inside internal combustion engines (ICEs) as a necessary background for combustion studies aimed at improving engine efficiency and emissions. Theoretical, experimental and computational investigations were undertaken to devise and validate a refined second order turbulence model for multi-dimensional engine calculations. Integration of the turbulence model and combustion data was investigated. Inside the combustion chamber of a reciprocating engine, the flow is highly turbulent. This property directly affects the efficiency of ICEs: it enhances flame propagation, heat transfer through the walls and the quality of mix in diesel engines. In recent years, multi-dimensional calculations have proven a useful tool for engine designers. However, because of the large range of eddy scales that are present in the flow, numerical computations cannot capture the details of turbulent motion. Consequently, a correct description of turbulence fields is essential for better combustion predictions. The objective of this project was to improve knowledge of turbulence inside internal combustion engines. Theoretical, experimental and numerical investigations were developed to devise and validate refined turbulence models for multi-dimensional calculations. The research was intended to provide the necessary background for combustion studies in ICEs.
