Objetivo
The work aims at evaluating the part played in corrosion by the mineral content of the fluid, by organic matter in the water and by the presence of various bacteria. This will lead to the proposal of efficient preventive and curative measures.
Previous work conducted by the proposers has demonstrated the role of organic matter contained in water as a limiting factor for microbial corrosion of metals in a geothermal environment. Organic matter serves as a nutrient for the microorganisms, particularly for corrosion-causing bacteria and common bacteria which form cell attachment (biofilm) on immersed surfaces.
Corrosion is found in geothermal wells in the Paris Basin and also in other geothermal plants situated in different European countries. It constitutes one of the problems that influence the profitability of the geothermal plant.
The work programme is based on the results of previous projects, but also comprises following
- development of methods for measuring the biological activity; - design and construction of experimental set-ups for the study of mid-term and long-term effects of biological activity on corrosion of metals in geothermal environment.
The results will enable prediction of the risk of microbial corrosion in geothermal installations as a function of the water characteristics, of the environment and of the materials involved. The research will also provide a method for the selection of organic inhibitors with respect to their long term effect on microbial corrosion phenomena.
