Solar energy technology - innovative support for European building designers

Objetivo

The SOLINFO project will undertake specific measures to support, complement and extend the JOULE 2 'Solar House' programme and to assist in achieving its objectives in the progress of energy-conscious architecture in Europe and the promotion of new passive cooling design concepts.

SOLINFO will provide support to the ten selected 'Solar House' project teams (which include some of Europe's leading architects)
- in briefing and ensuring access to CEC design tools and expertise; - in preparing six-monthly progress 'digests' for architectural magazines; - in documenting energy design processes and evaluation; and - in 'publishing' the building designs.

A European passive cooling architectural ideas competition will be arranged which will bring forward innovative concepts and design strategies and promote high standards of design in this developing solar technology. The focus will be on new buildings and the competition will emphasise human comfort conditions and stress the importance of avoiding summer overheating by addressing issues such as shading, insulation, high reflectance, ventilation and internal gains, and by highlighting passive cooling mechanisms.

The project will also provide database and programme support and assist in promoting EC conferences and disseminating their results, with particular reference to the 1993 Third European Conference on Architecture in Florence; including the provision of targeted mailing lists, the design of promotional posters, etc.
