Fuel cell systems optimisation studies

Resultados aprovechables

The project aimed to undertake techno-economic analyses of a number of potential fuel cell-based integrated energy systems, to establish the most promising routes for the development of large-scale applications, and the key factors which must be addressed for the optimisation of such systems. Fuel cell development has now reached a stage where careful planning must be undertaken for system integration into real commercial applications. There are various kinds of power generation systems based on fuel cells. There are also a wide range of fuel types which can be used in such systems. These include coal, natural gas, biomass and hydrogen. Fuel cells can be used in a wide variety of applications, such as low-temperature co-generation, air-conditioning, industrial heat recovery or as part of an energy storage system. The planning of fuel cell-based power generation systems therefore needs to take into account the size of the plant, the fuel to be used, the application area and the preferred type of fuel cell. The project aimed to investigate 20 case studies across the spectrum of applications and fuel cell types, including various options for fuel processing and gas treatment.
